What the grammar checker looks for

Six checks run every time you press the button, and each one explains itself before you accept the fix.

Spelling

Finds the words that are most often typed wrong, such as "recieve" or "seperate".

Grammar

Detects missing apostrophes, the wrong article, and words repeated twice in a row.

Punctuation

Catches spacing before and after punctuation, doubled marks, and missing full stops.

Capitalization

Flags sentences that begin with a lowercase letter, including the first word of the text.

Readability

Scores the text with Flesch Reading Ease and the Flesch-Kincaid grade level.

Style notes

Points out sentences that run long and counts the passive voice constructions in your text.

How to use the online grammar checker

Paste a paragraph, an email, or a whole article into the text box and press Check grammar. The results panel lists every problem in the order it appears, so you can work through them from the top down. Each entry names the issue, shows the exact text that caused it, and explains what is wrong in a sentence.

When the correction is unambiguous, click the issue to apply it. The text is rewritten in place and the checker runs again, so you always see the result of the change you just made. If you would rather fix everything at once, Apply all fixes repairs every mechanical problem in a single step.

Under the checker, the statistics strip shows the word count, sentence count, estimated reading time, the Flesch Reading Ease score, the Flesch-Kincaid grade level, and the total number of issues. A reading ease score in the eighties means the text is easy to read; below sixty usually means the sentences are long or the words are complex. These numbers are useful for editing, but they are a guide rather than a verdict.

Like every tool on this site, the grammar checker runs entirely in your browser. Your draft is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never seen by anyone else, which matters when you are checking a private email or an unpublished manuscript.

Need to change the capitalisation rather than the wording? The case converter on the home page handles upper case, title case, camelCase, snake_case, kebab-case, and nine other formats in the same browser-only way.

Grammar checker questions

How the online grammar checker handles your text, and what it can and cannot do.

What is an online grammar checker?
An online grammar checker scans your text for spelling mistakes, grammar errors, and punctuation problems, then shows you exactly what is wrong and how to fix it. This grammar checker runs entirely inside your browser, so the text you paste is never uploaded, logged, or sent to a server.
Is my text uploaded when I check it?
No. Every check happens locally in JavaScript on your own device. The text is processed in memory and is discarded when you close the tab. Nothing is stored, nothing is transmitted, and there is no account to create.
What kinds of errors does it find?
The checker looks for frequently misspelled words, missing apostrophes in contractions such as dont and its, the wrong article (a versus an), words repeated twice in a row, sentences that start with a lowercase letter, and spacing and punctuation problems. It also reports style notes such as very long sentences and passive voice.
Can it fix the problems for me?
Yes. Every issue that has an obvious correction comes with a one-click fix, and an Apply all fixes button repairs everything it can in a single action. Style notes that need a human decision, such as a sentence that runs long, are flagged without a fix so you can rewrite them yourself.
Does a grammar checker replace a human editor?
No. This tool catches mechanical mistakes — typos, wrong words, missing capitals, and spacing — and it gives you a readability score. It cannot judge tone, clarity of argument, or whether your sentence structure is the clearest way to say something. Use it as a first pass, then read the text again yourself.
What is a readability score?
The readability score is the Flesch Reading Ease score, which rates how difficult a passage is to read on a scale from 0 to 100. Higher is easier. The grade level next to it is the Flesch-Kincaid grade, the school year a reader would need to read the text comfortably. Both are calculated from sentence length and syllable count.
